1. My Mom Is Magical!
Age range: 0-3 Type: board book
This board book, geared towards very young children, is chock-full of charm… and yes, pure magic! Accompanied by sweet, vivacious, and stylish illustrations, it’s fantastic to read to your tinies on or around Mother’s Day as it beautifully celebrates mom-hood in all of its spellbinding glory.
2. Unicorn Day
Yay! Unicorns’ favorite day of the year has finally arrived and everyone is busy frolicking and having fun: dancing with butterflies, catching cupcakes literally falling from the sky, sliding down rainbows – you know, doing the classic unicorn-y things. This enchanting picture book isn’t only about the joys of being a unicorn though – when the happy bunch discovers a horse in their midst and decides to embrace him exactly as he is, its message – all about inclusivity and friendship – becomes equally delightful. Bring on the glitter!
(And if you and your little ones get charmed by this one [and you will!], there are also other books in the series to explore: Unicorn Night and Unicorn Christmas.)
3. Shine Like a Unicorn
Age range: 4-8 Type: picture book
4. Unicorns Are The Worst!
Age range: 3-8 Type: picture book
There are only two words in the English dictionary that can properly describe this cute romp of a picture book: RIOTOUSLY HILARIOUS. The story is told from the perspective of a grouchy goblin who is forced to deal with his new, bubbly, frivolous, and glitter-loving neighbors. In his eyes, magic is and should stay a serious business! That is, until the unicorns prove that their lightheartedness is not flippancy at all and even glitter can, in fact, be used to create powerful magic.
It’s the type of story you can definitely read aloud over and over again as it will surely hold your kiddos’ attention. The illustrations are lively and bursting with color, and the message of not giving in to prejudice and making assumptions about others is subtle, yet poignant.
5. Why Can’t We Be Bestie-Corns?
Age range: 4-8 Type: picture book
Part of the Kevin the Unicorn series, this cheeky installment is all about friendship and what it takes to build one. It cleverly flips the script though – when another unicorn, Eric, moves in next door, Kevin is sure they are destined to be the best of friends… only to discover that sometimes, despite both parties’ best efforts, friendship is simply not in the cards.
This is a great title for parents to teach discernment and not forcing relationships and for kids to learn how to deal with the ensuing disappointment. Although this description may make it seem really serious, the book is, in fact, pure fun! The sparkingly witty text and the cute, silly illustrations will undoubtedly tickle your child’s funny bone.
